Welcome to Overlake Admission

Lou Sabino, Director of Admission and Financial Aid

Welcome to The Overlake School. I’m so glad you have decided to consider us for your child’s education. We are celebrating our 50th anniversary this year, and with it we have the opportunity to look back on the amazing history of this school. Overlake is the oldest independent coeducational college preparatory program in the Seattle area, founded as a school that embraced the values of the community of which it was a part, focused on bringing the very best educational experience and a counterbalance to many of the outdated educational ideas and structures of the time.

From its modest roots in the small basement of a local YMCA to the beautiful 73-acre hilltop campus of today, the physical resources of the school have changed greatly. But what has remained consistent throughout its history is a commitment to the ideals of the mission of the school. Our mission challenges us to provide our students the tools to be successful academically in college and to help them develop the skills they need to be productive, engaged members of the communities they join later in life. Overlake graduates are entrepreneurs, writers, programmers, doctors, lawyers, aid workers, financiers, and scholars to name a few. The common theme when you talk to one of our graduates is that they received not only the skills to be successful in life, however they might define it, but that they have the social and emotional resources to live well, to build strong relationships, and to be engaged in communities that provide meaning in their lives.

What will your child find here in 2017? They will find a school focused on the needs of its students, friends who will challenge and support them, and opportunities that focus on depth of experience. They will find classmates who are willing to take intellectual risks, and support their classmates as they step outside their comfort zones to explore new ideas and activities. They will find teachers who are always working to make sure that students are challenged in the classroom, and are exposed to what it means to be an active learner in the 21st century.

There is a lot of information on this website about the program of the school, what we do, and what kind of community we are. The admission process here is competitive, but we work to ensure that the students we bring into the school will be successful here and will be a part of a class that will engage and support them through their time here at Overlake and into the future.

We hope you will visit us and see for yourself what makes this place so special. We have open houses and campus tours available throughout the coming months, and we are always happy to answer any questions you have about the school or the admission process. I look forward to meeting you.

Regards,
