In this project, you will explore the housing crisis facing the Seattle and King County metro area through a combination of learning, service, and activism.

During this project, you will

  • Engage in hands-on service work to address immediate needs in the housing crisis, including working at local food banks and serving hot meals, with the opportunity to earn 8-15 service hours
  • Meet a variety of housing justice leaders such as local government agencies, activist groups centered on housing justice, groups providing legal assistance to fight eviction, and others
  • Reflect on the role of service work versus activism in addressing the housing crisis
  • Understand how different activism and advocacy strategies can affect change
  • Collaboratively generate an activism project to address the region’s housing crisis, which might include additional service work, advocating for specific housing laws or policies, educating the Overlake community about urgent issues, and more!
Special Considerations

Students will be on their feet frequently, engaging in a variety of service projects and activities both on the Eastside and in Seattle.

Participants must be willing to follow COVID guidelines.  Participants should only attend illness free. If a participant should test positive for COVID during the project, the student will be isolated, and the student’s family will be required to pick them up at their current location.  The family will bear all the costs associated with the student pick up.

By selecting the above project, you and your family are accepting the financial responsibility for the cost of the projects.  This includes any unrecoverable expenses incurred if Overlake, or any federal, state or local government forces cancelation of the project, or if you or your family decide not to attend, or if your student becomes symptomatic and has to be isolated.
