MS Study Hall Expectations

All Middle School students have scheduled study halls throughout the rotation depending on their grade and individual schedules.  Study hall is offered because teachers know how important it is to provide time for students to seek extra help, make up work, and complete homework during the school day. We hope that students will learn time-management and self-advocacy skills in using study hall to see teachers and to get homework completed.

Middle School study hall is not the equivalent to Upper School free block; Middle School students do not have the option to socialize or hang out during their study hall or play on computers. The following guidelines are established so that there is a quiet, focused study time that can be used effectively for all students in all study halls.

  1. You must go to your own study hall first (even before going to make up a test), and then sit down and get started on some work.  You will not be able to go anywhere for any reason for the first five minutes of study hall.
  2. Arrive on-time and with materials (books, etc) to keep you busy for the entire study hall.
  3. If you need to go to the library, you must come to your study hall with a pass from the subject teacher.  You will not be allowed to go get a pass to go the library.  If you don’t arrive with it, you can’t go to the library.  Also, only two students from each study hall may go to the library at any given time.  Please complete your work as quickly as possible and return to your study hall so that the next person may go.  If a large number of students want to go to the library, your teacher may give you a time limit.  Please be considerate of others by keeping to the time you are given.
  4. Sometimes, the computer lab will be available.  On those days, if you would like to go to the lab, ask your study hall proctor for a pass.  You do not need to have one in advance from a different teacher.  You do need to return to study hall with the pass signed after you are finished in the lab.  Again, only two students from each study hall may go to the lab at any given time.  Please complete your work as quickly as possible and return to your study hall so that the next person may go.  If a large number of students want to go to the lab, your teacher may give you a time limit.  Please be considerate of others by keeping to the time you are given.
  5. If you need to see a teacher for help, you may ask your study hall proctor for a pass.  You do not have to have a pass in advance to go get help with your homework or ask a question, etc.  You do need to return to study hall with the pass signed from the teacher you went to see.  If you cannot find the teacher then you should be back in study hall within 5 minutes.
  6. If you would like to see a Learning Specialist, ask your study hall proctor for a pass.  You do not need to have one in advance.  You do need to return to study hall with the pass signed after you meet with them.  If no one is available to meet, you should return to study hall within 5 minutes.
  7. Working with other students will be allowed ONLY within your study hall room with permission from the proctor.  You may not get another student from another study hall to do homework or study for a quiz, test, etc.  Exceptions to this are at the discretion of your study hall teacher.
