Welcome to our stand-up paddleboard (SUP) class explicitly tailored for Senior students who need to meet the Graduation requirement before the end of the year.
Over the course of 4 hours, we'll dive into the fundamentals of SUP, ensuring you're not only comfortable on the board but also gain essential skills to paddle confidently. Our very own, Dr. José González, Instructor Trainer for the American Canoe Association (ACA) will be teaching this class at Lake Washington. Here is an interview with SUPConnect that describes Jose's background in Stand Up Paddleboarding.
Here's what you can expect:
1. Introduction to SUP: We'll kick things off with a brief overview of the history of SUP and its rising popularity as a watersport. We'll cover the basic equipment, including the board, paddle, and safety gear, emphasizing the importance of proper usage and care.
2. Risk Management. We'll go over essential safety protocols, including how to properly wear a personal flotation device (PFD), how to fall safely, and what to do in case of emergencies. Our goal is to ensure everyone feels confident on the water.
3. Board Handling: Before we hit the water, you'll learn how to handle your board on land. This includes carrying techniques, how to properly mount and dismount the board, and basic board control exercises to get comfortable with its stability.
4. Paddle Techniques: The paddle is your engine on the water. We'll cover the proper techniques for holding the paddle, paddling stance, and basic strokes such as forward stroke, reverse stroke, and sweep strokes for turning. We'll also introduce techniques for paddling efficiently and reducing fatigue.
5. Basic Maneuvering: Once you've got the hang of paddling and balancing, we'll move on to basic maneuvering techniques. This includes how to turn the board using sweep strokes, pivot turns, and edging techniques. We'll also cover how to navigate different water conditions and deal with wind and currents.
6. Fun Challenges and Games: Learning should be fun! We'll incorporate some friendly challenges and games into the session to keep things exciting while reinforcing the skills you've learned.
