Upcoming Book Talk- Join Matt and Guest Professors as they Delve into “Citizen”

citizen book talk

The second book this school year that Head of School Matt Horvat is inviting the community to read is Citizen by Claudia Rankine. Citizen is a book-length poem published in 2014 which has won numerous awards and has the distinction of being the only poetry book to be a New York Times bestseller in the nonfiction category.

Citizen explores what it means to a black citizen in the United States today. Here is how the LA Times reviewers described the book

"So groundbreaking is Rankine's work that it's almost impossible to describe; suffice it to say that this is a poem that reads like an essay (or the other way around)—a piece of writing that invents a new form for itself, incorporating pictures, slogans, social commentary and the most piercing and affecting revelations to evoke the intersection of inner and outer life."

Joining Horvat is Lena Tuffaha, Overlake Board of Trustee member and Diversity Committee Chair, as well as Chandan Reddy and Kemi Adeyemi, both Associate Professors in the Department of Gender, Women and Sexuality Studies at the University of Washington.

The book talk is open to the entire Overlake community and will be held on Tuesday, February 13 at 7:00pm in the school library.
