The Music Man Welcomes All Students

With an always vibrant arts scene, Overlake celebrates its 50th anniversary with a return to the school’s first ever theater production.

Meredith Wilson’s The Music Man opens on the Fulton stage in March, and the production starts next week with auditions.

Director Beth Highland and Music Director Erin Gabriel are looking to fill dozens of roles for middle and upper school students.

As an all school musical, The Music Man is filled with song and dance. It also offers an opportunity for our young actors to work alongside Overlake’s more seasoned theater students.

“With these bonds they create, they become a family,” said Highland. “It’s a beautiful mentorship between the students and plants the seeds for some of our young actors to see where this talent can lead.”

While no experience is necessary, taking part in The Music Man is a commitment.

Dancing, singing and acting skills are casting considerations, but Highland says students need to demonstrate that they have prepared for the audition. “It’s important to perform well, have a smile on your face, and have fun doing it,” says Highland. “We want our actors to focus on being part of an ensemble and supporting one another throughout the process. It is not about personal achievement or agendas. It’s about what we can collectively create as an experience of theater together.”

Auditions take place through Wednesday, and the directors plan to call back actors to begin script readings in November. Rehearsals will take place after school beginning in January, and Highland wants students and parents to know that the schedule is intense and rigorous.
