Overlakers Help Save Lives Through Blood Drive

Everyone on our campus knows that Overlakers take an active part in serving our community. Friday, that service helped save lives.

Dozens of students, faculty, staff, and relatives came to the gym to donate blood. The event was put on by the Outreach Club. “We thought it was a perfect time and opportunity to use the club to bring Bloodworks Northwest to our school,” says Nicole Z. (’19). “Once the donations are made here, the product is separated into plasma, platelets, and red blood which has the ability to save three lives from a single donation.”

The Outreach Club worked with Overlake to put on the event in the gym. Bloodworks Northwest collected blood from the morning into the afternoon. Because the minimum age for donations is 16, it was a first-time experience for most students. “I’m a healthy individual, and I think it’s real important to help other people whose lives can be saved through my donation,” says Alan N. (’21). “I’m young and wanted to make a difference.”

Nicole has been a volunteer with Bloodworks Northwest for three years and has seen the impact that an ample blood supply makes in the community. As someone who is interested in medicine, she says she appreciates the donors who came in for the event. “We had movies, food, and drinks so everyone was having a great time with it. I’m so thankful to all the donors who signed up with their busy schedules to actively make a decision to help save the lives of others. It’s really amazing to see.”
