Library's New Use for Books

library book stacking

The Overlake Library likes to start off our year with a bang—literally!

The first Middle School Library contest of the year is our Book Stacking Contest, which is not only fun, but makes good use of library discards like thirty-year-old encyclopedias and biographies of teen pop stars now in their fifties.

At lunchtime, participants get two boxes of discarded books and must see how fast they can stack the entire contents into one non-wobbling pile. Once their time has been recorded, they get to their favorite part—knocking the stack over with a bang and clatter!

Then the next team or individual gets the chance to see how fast they can stack the books.

All teams who complete a stack earn Green/Gold points and prizes, which always include the option of Miss Moore’s homemade cookies or a non-food prize.

This year’s super-fast winners—clocking in at an amazing 13 seconds—are Luke B. and Hans E. (8th grade). Book stacking stars!
