October Book Clubs

Book covers for Into the Wild and Lightning Thief

For October Middle School book clubs, students chose the books by previously voting, and the first five to sign up for club got a free copy of the book. The 5th-6th graders who signed up read the Erin Hunter book Into the Wild, first in the wildly popular and incredibly long-running Warriors series, about warrior clans of cats in the wild. At the meeting, they made pin-back buttons with creatively illustrated cats, and discussed the book and the series as a whole. The 7th-8th graders chose Rick Riordan's The Lightning Thief as their book, part of the even more wildly popular Percy Jackson series. The students had to solve a riddle that included some ancient Greek, find a hidden key, and then use a blacklight to find Zeus' missing lightning bolt. They then had a spirited discussion about the book and the series, with many passionate viewpoints represented.

November book clubs will be open meetings, to talk about what students are currently reading, get some book recommendations, and maybe play some book games.
