Middle School Girl Power

MS ASB reps

It’s an all-girl lineup this year in Middle School ASB. Laya R. 8th grade, was elected President, Sam S. 7th grade, was elected Vice-President, and Simrita P. 7th grade, was elected as Secretary. These students are excited to make this year great.

“I want to make sure everybody has a fun time this year and enjoys themselves,” Simrita P. said about why she decided to run for ASB office this year.

When a student runs for ASB, they’re saying to their peers, “I want to give up my time and energy to make a better experience for everyone else,” said Mike Davidson, Head of Middle School. Students will help plan social events, lead announcements, and learn to be great leaders.

“Our guiding belief is, ‘you can only learn leadership if you’re in charge of something’”, Davidson said.

President Laya R., said she recalls admiring former ASB presidents in her time at Overlake and loved how they carried on traditions and is excited to follow suit. “I love helping people and it’s great to be able to make a difference,” she said.

All three ASB officers have been a part of student leadership either at Overlake or at previous schools as homeroom or grade representatives, which inspired their desire to run this year.

When they thought about what their hopes were for this year, they all talked about proudly carrying on school traditions, and planning school socials and dances for their peers. The common themes overwhelmingly centered on connection and fun.

“Last year it was hard to have everyone connect. I want to help everyone have a great experience before they go off to high school,” Sam S. said. “We’re excited to bring back a lot of the things that people in the past loved about their school year while still being covid friendly.”
