Girls' Golf Rising Stars

With every hole, Girls’ Golf Coach Jordan Allyne sees improvement with her team.

She says that improvement begins at the tee. “When you’re out there, trust and know you can do it,” she tells her players at the beginning of a practice. “You’ve put enough time on the range to work on the details, now is the time to just go out there and play, relax, and trust your swing. Realize that you’ve only got this next shot.”

It’s a message that resonates with every player on the roster as Allyne works with a group that includes players coached by golf pros to players picking up the clubs for the first time. “I’ve told them that you can take this game as far as you want. It depends on how much time you want to put into it,” says Allyne. “I’m available to help in any way, and I’m excited because they’re all really into it.”

The Owls are hopeful that they’ll represent at the state tournament this year. With weather that hasn’t been too cooperative the past few weeks, the team has had to cancel some practices, cut others short, or spend time in the club house covering rules.

As the team nears tournament qualifiers, players are optimistic that Overlake will be in Spokane for the state finals in May. Right now, they’re working to make each other better. “The first few years have been sort of up and down, and this year I’m really seeing us grow, not only in numbers, but also in how we’re doing,” says Captain Meili Z. (19). “We’re all motivating each other to reach our goals, and it’s easy because it’s such a fun group of girls.

With only a couple invitationals left on the schedule before the May 8th Emerald City League tournament, players are working in areas that they personally need to improve. “The qualifying rounds are individually based and not team based so it’s up to each player to see how far they can go. I think you’ll see players do really well,” adds Meili.

With no seniors on the roster, you can expect to see some rising stars in Owls’ golf. Your next chance to check them out is on April 26 at the Jefferson Golf Course in Seattle. Play begins at 3:15 p.m.
