Upper School Dance Info

Our first 9-12th grade US dance is right around the corner on Friday, October 27th from 9-11pm. The Upper School ASB has had fun planning and prepping for this year’s dance theme, Under the Sea. Below are some helpful reminders for students and families.

Description: Traditionally the first dance of the school year is informal. Students should be able to find much of their costumes for the theme, Under the Sea, in their closets or Value Village. When planning think of the Little Mermaid, Gilligan’s Island, Lilo & Stitch, and Surf’s Up to get your creative juices flowing. Or, don’t dress up, it’s up to you and we will have students that prefer to wear just their usual style to dances which is totally acceptable.

Before the Dance: Some students decide to go to group dinners prior to the dance. Pizza is always a great option. There will be chaperones in the Upper Parking Lot to supervise students as they come into the dance to reduce speeding, loitering, or any other mischief.

Tickets: Admission to the dance is $7.00, which will be charged to student accounts at the door. Cash is also accepted if students would prefer to pay at the door.

Time: The dance starts at 9pm. Students may not arrive after 9:30pm. Students who arrive after 9:30pm will not be allowed to enter. The dance ends at 11pm, and all students should have advance plans for transportation home after the dance.

Guests: Overlake students are allowed to bring one guest from other area schools. These guests must fill out a dance guest form with parent and administrator signatures which can be found here or outside the Dean of Students office. Guests forms need to be returned to Meghan Waddle by 3:10pm on Friday, October 27th. Guests that did not have a form returned may not enter. All guests must be accompanied by their Overlake School hosts, who are responsible for their guests during the evening.

Dance Rules & Etiquette: Students are expected to behave in ways consistent with all Upper School Student Policies. Before entering the dance, all students must sign a form indicating they understand the school rules prohibiting the use of drugs or alcohol at or before the dance. Students who leave before the end of the dance will be checked out on the attendance sheet. Once students leave the dance, they may not re-enter (Exception: Students may step outside the front doors for fresh air, but not leave the immediate vicinity of the front doors). Students may not arrive under the influence of drugs or alcohol. If a student is suspected to be in violation of these rules the Dean of Student reserves the right to breathalyze the student and/or call for parent pickup immediately. Overlake does not permit dancing that is explicitly sexual or judged inappropriate by members of the faculty chaperones. Though, we do not prohibit back to front dancing between dance partners, we do require distance between dance partners. The practice of “grinding” as student’s dance is not allowed. If this style of dancing occurs, the music will be stopped and the lights turned on. The dance will resume after a short break. If the behavior continues, the Dean of Students reserves the right to stop the dance for the evening.
