Gaining an appreciation for the "great outdoors" is just the beginning in Overlake’s Outdoor Program. Intended to help students develop physically and mentally, the program increases appreciation for the environment, and encourages students to cooperate with others and take responsibility for their own actions. Students learn through first-hand experience, using perseverance, good judgment, concentration, and leadership skills, to successfully navigate wilderness challenges.
Trips include river and sea kayaking, mountaineering, backpacking, whitewater rafting, and snowshoeing. Experienced outdoor professionals with CPR and First Aid certification, Wilderness First Responder training, or Emergency Medical Technician training lead every trip. Usually, one of the leaders is a faculty member. The leaders structure the trips by planning activities, promoting teamwork and acting as models and mentors.
