Capital Campaign
Learning, Leadership, Legacy:
A Campaign for The Overlake School
In 2008, Overlake embarked on the most ambitious capital fundraising campaign in the history of the school. The goal of the campaign is $15 million, which will partially fund the construction of three core academic buildings—a new Humanities Building, a new Technology/Language Center (TLC) and a new Fifth/Sixth Center. The campaign also includes renovations to the Campus Center and $3 million for endowment. The total project cost is $25 million and the balance, $10 million, will be paid with State of Washington low-interest bonds, available only to non-profit organizations.
As of June, 2009, $6 million has been raised. Our next goal is to raise another $6 million by April of 2010. Parents of current students, alumni, parents of alumni, faculty and staff and friends will all be asked to support this very important effort.
These three buildings represent the completion of a fifteen-year facilities plan and will create an Overlake campus for the twenty-first century:
The William C. Armstrong Humanities Building
Completed in February 2009 and named in honor of Bill “Army” Armstrong who has taught English at Overlake since 1971, the building combines English and history classes for grades seven through twelve, creating a humanities “hub” that promotes interdisciplinary learning. The lower floor also provides dedicated community space for seventh and eighth graders.
Technology/Language Center (TLC)
The new TLC will be ready for student use in the fall of 2010. The language wing will contain seven classrooms, a language lab and a language kitchen. The technology area will house computer labs, the server room and technology offices. The top floor of the technology wing will be used as an Upper School multi-purpose space and activities center that can be used for ASB meetings, advisory meetings, class meetings or as a relaxing social space. The new TLC will be connected to the Library by covered walkway.
Fifth/Sixth Center
This new classroom building will be constructed on the footprint of the current sixth grade center and will open in the fall of 2011. The spacious two-story structure will combine fifth and sixth grades as well as provide common social spaces that are age-appropriate. One of the current fifth-grade buildings will be remodeled as a seventh and eighth grade science lab.
Campus Center Improvements
Renovations will take place during the summer of 2010. The improved Campus Center will have seating for 350, additional gathering spaces, redesigned circulation for meal service and administrative offices.
Endowment
A successful campaign will strengthen Overlake’s endowment and provide important resources for the school’s future. A strong endowment gives financial stability, helps maintain Overlake’s commitment to socio-economic diversity and financial aid and ensures a regular stream of non-tuition income.
