Capital Campaign
Learning, Leadership, Legacy:
A Campaign for The Overlake School
In 2008, Overlake embarked on the most ambitious fundraising campaign in the history of the school. The campaign goal for construction is $11M, which will partially pay for building three new core academic buildings—the William C. Armstrong Humanities Building, the new Technology & Language Center and the Francisco J. Grijalva Fifth & Sixth Grade Center. The campaign also includes expansion of the Campus Center and interior renovations to the Library. The total project cost is $21 million—$11 million from fundraising and $10 million from State of Washington low-interest bonds available only to non-profit organizations. Upon completion of the construction portion of the campaign, the school will launch an on-going major gifts campaign for endowment, which will assure the school’s future success. Our endowment goal is to have twice the school’s annual operating budget or approximately $24 million. Currently, we have approximately one year’s operating.
As of April 1, 2011, $10.5 million has been raised and our final construction campaign goal is to raise another $500,000 by the end of June 2011. Parents of current students, alumni, parents of alumni, faculty and staff, grandparents and friends are all being asked to support this very important effort. Gifts to the Learning, Leadership, Legacy Capital Campaign are unrestricted.
The completion of these three outstanding new building plus the expansion of the Campus Center represent the completion of a fifteen-year facilities plan and fulfills the school’s vision for a 21st- century campus.William C. Armstrong Humanities Building
Completed in February 2009 and named in honor of Bill “Army” Armstrong, who has taught English at Overlake since 1971, the Humanities building combines English and history classes for grades seven through twelve, creating a humanities “hub” that promotes interdisciplinary learning. The lower floor also provides dedicated community space for seventh and eighth graders.
Technology/Language Center (TLC)
Completed in May of 2010, the new TLC language wing contains seven classrooms, a language lab and a language kitchen. The technology area houses computer labs, the server room and technology offices. The top floor of the technology wing is an Upper School multi-purpose space and activities center that is used for ASB meetings, advisory meetings, class meetings and a relaxing social space. The new TLC is connected to the Library by covered walkway.
Francisco J. Grijalva Fifth & Sixth Grade Center
In January, the school’s Board of Trustees decided to name the new Fifth & Sixth Grade Center in honor of Francisco J. Grijalva, to honor his exceptional leadership as Head of School since 1995. This wonderful new building opened in mid-April 2011, much to the joy of both students and teachers. The spacious two-story structure provides classrooms, lab space and age-appropriate social space for the youngest Overlake students.
Campus Center Improvements
Renovations will take place during the summer of 2011. The improved Campus Center will have seating for 350, additional gathering spaces, redesigned circulation for meal service and administrative offices.
Endowment
A successful campaign will strengthen Overlake’s endowment and provide important resources for the school’s future. A strong endowment gives financial stability, helps maintain Overlake’s commitment to socio-economic diversity and financial aid and ensures a regular stream of non-tuition income.
