The integrated 6th grade curriculum stresses clear, effective communication. Biography, journalism and American history provide content for English, part of integrated studies. Students hone their researching and presentation skills through a wide variety of independent, individual and cooperative projects throughout the school year. These projects also boost students' self-confidence and creativity. Students often use laptops and technology for research and composition.
In 6th grade, Mathematics focuses on computational skills with decimals and fractions. We explore geometry in depth, and percents, ratio and proportion, integers and basic algebra throughout the year, as they apply to problem solving. We stress reading, listening, writing and speaking skills as students learn to communicate mathematical ideas in the same way they communicate ideas in other subject areas. We continue scientific inquiry in 6th grade science, as students develop data recording, data analysis, experimental design and lab report writing skills.
The 6th grade arts program cultivates imagination and resourcefulness, laying a solid foundation in visual art, drama and music. Students may continue Latin, or begin a new language—French, Spanish, Japanese or Mandarin Chinese.
Physical Education continues to instill a positive attitude toward an active and healthy lifestyle. Students participate in a safe and nurturing environment, with a strong emphasis on sportsmanship.
