Sixth Grade
Clear, effective communication is a major goal of the integrated 6th grade curriculum. English is part of integrated studies using biography, journalism, and American history as the content. Students participate in a wide variety of independent, individual and cooperative projects throughout the school year designed to hone the students’ researching and presentation skills, raise their self-confidence, and encourage their creative abilities. Laptops and technology are often used for research and composition.
In 6th grade, Mathematics focuses on computational skills with decimals and fractions. Geometry is explored in depth, while percents, ratio and proportion, integers, and basic algebra are visited throughout the year as the topics are applied to problem solving. Reading, listening, writing, and speaking skills are stressed as students learn to communicate mathematical ideas just as they would communicate ideas in other subject areas. Scientific inquiry is continued in 6th grade Science as students develop skills in data recording, data analysis, experimental design and lab report writing.
The 6th grade Arts program cultivates imagination and resourcefulness laying a solid foundation in visual art, drama and music. Continued study of Latin gives each child a basis for further language study as well as an excellent glimpse at the source of much of our patterns of language with respect to structure and vocabulary.
Physical Education continues to instill a positive attitude toward an active and healthy lifestyle. Activities are conducted in a safe and nurturing environment as a strong emphasis placed on sportsmanship.. Sequential skill building moves through a progression of skill patterns specific to games.
