Fifth Grade
The 5th grade experience is characterized by an integrated and explorative, hands-on approach. Overlake provides students with the skills that will enable them to think and communicate effectively in a world that may be quite different from the one in which we live today.
The 5th grade curriculum is coordinated across disciplines to help students understand the importance of reading, writing, speaking, and listening in all that they do. Literature is integrated with the social studies curricula whenever possible. Composition is integrated into science, math as students share their problem solving strategies. Mathematics help to solidify computational skills and conceptual understanding of numbers, while the introduction of the scientific method teaches students to look for patterns, relationships and connections to other courses of study. The curriculum is further enhanced with the technology tools available on laptops and the Internet.
Additionally, 5th grade students are also required to study Art, Drama, Latin and Physical Education. The visual and performing arts enhance the creative development of each student. Whereas, Latin is presented in a natural context and students learn the basic parts of speech, which reinforce their own English language skills. The Overlake physical education is viewed as an essential part of the total educational process and offers a wide variety of traditional sports and non-traditional activities that allow for the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual growth of each student.
